Why You’re Never Going to Live Your Life

My mother was much younger than me when she had me. And realizing that, taught me 2 things. 1st, To have more compassion for my parents because they were raising another human being while probably having their own existential crisis at the same time.
2nd, is that we’re not living anymore. I think the age of self-helf and inspirational instagram quotes has made us feel like we have to achieve nirvana or something, before we’re allowed to live.
Maybe I’m projecting. Maybe it’s just me. But for a long time I waited. I waited to earn my life. I meditated all the meditations, I prayed all the prayers, I selfed all the love, I 30 day challenged all the challenges, all the while barely making any movement in actual real life. I spent 4 years in a job I didn’t like, but mentally/hypothetically curating a perfect “enlightened” life. I thought I hadn’t earned the right to have better. Just needed to listen to one more podcast first.

So thinking about my mother, younger than me giving birth to me, raising me, excelling sometimes, failing other times, it reminded me that she didn’t wait to live. I’m not telling you to get pregnant right now (but name the child after me if you do), I’m saying go do the thing. Your thing. Whatever that is.

Go and fail spectacularly, and also be badass.

Don’t wait to earn life, by checking meditation hours off on an app first, or wait to read all of Brené Brown’s books first, or try to numb your feelings under the guise of “vibrating higher”.
I mean, still do all that, but live at the same time! For the love of delicious Nutella live please! Go. Do. The. Thing.

You’ll probably fail. You’ll probably kick ass. You won’t know unless you get out of the silent meditation retreat and go be in the real world.
